Rotenda Gene Nevhutalu is a South African-born designer and artist whose work is rooted in philosophical inquiry—transforming thought into form through a unique perspective that blends cultural reverence with innovation, creating meaningful experiences that uplift and connect.

Rooted in the small town of Thohoyandou in Limpopo, his creative journey began with a desire to use design not only as a craft but as a contemplative tool—a way to turn abstract ideas into tangible forms that serve, uplift, and connect. Early on, this vision took shape through briGado, a brick-making kit developed to address housing and unemployment challenges, setting the tone for a practice grounded in social purpose and human dignity.

Rotenda holds an MA in Intelligent Mobility from the Royal College of Art in London, where his collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover explored the future of movement through the lens of cultural identity and technological imagination. His work moves fluidly across disciplines and scales—from speculative mobility systems to objects that challenge the boundary between utility and poetry—always carrying with it a quiet inquiry into meaning, presence, and legacy.

Professionally, Rotenda has contributed to design teams at Ford Motor Company, Changan Automobile Group, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. At Rolls-Royce, he serves on the Colour and Materials design team, supporting the shaping visual and sensory narratives that speak to heritage while embracing modernity. His role is as much about material intuition as it is about emotional resonance—using embelishments, tones, and finishes as a language to articulate the dreams of a global clientele.

Alongside his industry work, Rotenda collaborates closely with his renowned designer friend and mentor Benjamin Edgar, engaging with industrial design rooted in the interplay between the useful and the useless—merging irreverence with meticulous craftsmanship. Working alongside Edgar allows Rotenda to engage with industrial design in both a conceptual and deeply tactile way, further honing his ability to create objects that challenge conventional expectations while remaining inherently functional.

What distinguishes Rotenda is not merely his ability to design, but his commitment to exploring design as a philosophical act—a means of questioning, reflecting, and revealing. Each project is approached as a form of inquiry, where memory, identity, and cultural meaning are not just referenced, but actively engaged. Through this lens, his work becomes more than functional or aesthetic—it becomes a quiet dialogue between thought and form, offering space for contemplation, connection, and transformation.

At Rolls-Royce, Rotenda contributes to both Coachbuild commisions and production models within Colour & Trim. In Coachbuild, his role spans the full spectrum of materials and trims, supporting the curation and development of bespoke palettes that articulate the individuality of each commission. On production models, his focus is on conceptualizing finishes for decorative elements and graphical surface embellishments, ensuring that even the smallest details carry the brand’s language of craft and refinement.

This practice has sharpened his ability to balance conceptual vision with technical execution — to imagine and translate ideas into tangible, enduring expressions of luxury. Extending beyond Colour & Trim, he couples this foundation with a growing focus on visual and artistic storytelling: defining narratives and atmospheres and guiding how they are perceived through imagery, composition, and presentation.

Together, these skills allow him to work fluidly from the material to the visual, shaping not only how Rolls-Royce craftsmanship is built and felt, but also how it is communicated, experienced, and remembered.
